ARTIST STATEMENT

I think of all the artworks i create as souls, individual spirits born within the
moment of creation and synchronisity, each being pregnant with their own
potential, giving birth to new, improved versions of themselves. Healing the
viewer , Celebrating the human experience , and creating future worlds.
"Sexuality is self-determination. Yet, the free expression of sexuality in all its
facets, even in a society that defines itself as liberal, is not necessarily reality.

Artist Bio

Julia Hango, also known as JuliART, is a self-taught Namibian artist born in 1993 in Windhoek and currently based in Swakopmund. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses photography, collage, installation, and performance art, with a focus on challenging societal norms surrounding gender, identity, and the human body. Hango frequently uses her own naked form as a central element in her work, confronting audiences with themes of bodily autonomy and the deconstruction of traditional gender roles. In addition to her visual art, Hango has recently published her first book, Womanhood Journal, an 89 paged Ode to Womxn, which delves into themes of femininity, empowerment, and self-discovery. She also serves as a wellness consultant and spiritual guide under her brand Wild Womxn Apothecary, collaborating with LGBTQIA+, human rights, and feminist organizations worldwide to promote healing and self-acceptance.

Hango's work is deeply sensual and radical, often incorporating elements of eroticism and spirituality to explore the intersections of sexuality, identity, and empowerment. Her Street Art " life experiments" are strangely delightful, extremely provocative and yet still anonymous. Through projects like her podcast Masturbatorium and The Spirit and Sex podcasts she discusses topics such as cosmic sexuality and tantric traditions, aiming to destigmatize conversations around sexuality and promote a holistic understanding of the self. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions across Namibia and internationally, contributing to dialogues on queer identity, feminism, and decolonization in contemporary art.

Through her multifaceted practice, Julia Hango continues to challenge and expand perceptions of the body, identity, and empowerment, establishing herself as a significant voice in contemporary feminist and queer art.
